B.C. health officials reported 722 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, as well as seven additional deaths.

The new cases bring the total number of active cases in the province to 6,757. Out of these, 445 people are in hospital, including 157 in critical care.

The bulk of new cases continued to be in the hot-spot of the Lower Mainland. Vancouver Coastal Health reported 115 cases, while Fraser Health had 523.

New cases were significantly lower elsewhere in B.C.: Vancouver Island Health had 20 new cases, Interior Health had 38, and Northern Health had 26.

Despite varying levels of COVID-19 cases in the province, a regional approach is off the table, said health officials.

“We’ve seen this virus spread widely and quickly,” said Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’ provincial health officer, noting there is a lot of connectivity within the province, despite travel restrictions.

Regional approaches are not successful, she said. “We are not out of the woods anywhere until we’re out of the woods everywhere.”
